Nicole and I shared the same bed that night and after a time we slept. The following morning the air was clear, a midnight storm had blown through rattling the windows with some loud bangs. I awoke with a plan. It wasn’t much of one, but it was somewhere to start. I said to Nicole over breakfast, “If I can get some wheels, I’m going out to Hampton.”

Over the top of her glass of orange juice she gave me a look that told me she thought I was nuts. “Why?”

“I’ll be halfway there anyway so I thought I might check on Helen.”

“No trouble, Mark. It’s not even a wise idea.”

“It’ll be fine, I promise.”

“Where are you going to get a car from?”

“I figured I’ll go see Cyril.”

“If you’re determined to go back there then I’m coming with you.”

“All right, let’s go.”

“I’ll just let them know I’ll be a couple of minutes late.”
